Manila, Philippines — The University of Santo Tomas, the oldest existing university in Asia, has formally recognized the contribution of Filipino science fiction to the advancement of science communication and public discourse in the Philippines.
As part of the Centennial Celebration of the University of Santo Tomas College of Science, the University has invited Renato Clarete Tranquilino, an acclaimed Pinoy sci-fi author of 8Letters Bookstore and Publishing, to attend the prestigious Science Communicators Recognition Night. The event will be held during the Science, Technology, & Society (STS) Summit on 25 March 2026 (Wednesday), from 3:30 to 7:30 PM, at the Dr. Robert C. Sy Grand Ballroom, Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building, University of Santo Tomas, Manila.
The Recognition Night is organized under the segment “Agham para sa Mamamayan: Bringing Science Closer to Communities,” a program that highlights the vital role of science communication in fostering informed, inclusive, and evidence-based public discourse.
Through his body of work, Tranquilino uses science fiction to explore themes of human resilience, identity, and societal change in the context of advancing technology. His narratives bring distinctly Filipino perspectives into stories that invite critical reflection on our collective future, bridging imagination and scientific inquiry.
The University recognizes Tranquilino as one of the individuals who exemplify excellence in using creative storytelling to communicate complex ideas about science, society, and the human condition. His recognition underscores the growing acknowledgment of speculative fiction as a powerful medium for engaging communities in meaningful conversations about science and its impact on everyday life.
By honoring voices from the literary sphere alongside traditional science communicators, the University of Santo Tomas reaffirms its commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue and its enduring mission to bring science closer to the Filipino people.
